The Ten Worst Things a Parent Can Say!

Barbara Greenberg, PhD, Teen Parenting Expert

Sometimes words leave our mouths and we'd like to shove them right back in. Unfortunately, we don't have a rewind button. Once the words leave our lips, we've already made an impression on our kids.

What to Do About The Freshman 15

Barbara Greenberg, PhD, Teen Parenting Expert

We drop our kids off at college with lots of heavy luggage and yes they probably have over-packed. What we sometimes fail to remember from our own college experiences is that they are likely to return home with even heavier luggage. You see along with making new friends and gaining lots of new experiences and ideas during their freshman year they also gain something that they are not too happy about. I am referring to the Freshman 15 -- the all-too-common extra 15 pounds that they pack on during their first year at college.

Go Army!

Kim Wenzler

The predictions started to trickle in around mid-week.  We ignored them. By Friday, there were firm warnings of inclement weather. A nor’easter, they’d said.  My concerns were voiced and promptly pushed aside as my husband went about plans as usual. Snow? In October? How bad could it be?  So, Saturday morning found us packing the car with drinks, snacks, chairs, and okay, hats and gloves for good measure. Off we went!!

A Freudian Slip to Make Freud Blush

Jenny From the Blog AKA Jenny Isenman

I know he seems more angry than "blushy" but YOU try and get a picture of him embarrassed!

This post needs to be filed in the crevices of my mind where repressed memories are stored and then covered up by something to obsess about, like my cellulite, or the wrinkles on my face that multiply faster then the Duggar family.

High Blood Pressure: Is Your Child At Risk?

Dr. James A. Hellinger, MD, Attending Physician, Clinical Faculty at Tufts Medical Center

“High blood pressure in kids? That’s what my grandmother has!”

Nearly 2 out of 3 American adults have unhealthy blood pressure. Hypertension, or high blood pressure (HBP), cuts off nearly 5 years from an average person’s life. It is more common beyond middle age. Hence, what comes to mind when discussing HBP are adults challenged to maintain a healthy lifestyle: regular exercise, a healthy diet, and weight control, simple routines that help prevent HBP.

I'm Afraid that My Teen is Too Old to Trick-or-Treat

Barbara Greenberg, Ph.D

Dear Dr. G.,

I am the mother of four. My kids ages vary in range from 6-17. I'm often confused about what is age-appropriate and what might be considered too mature or immature for my kids. You would think that I'd have all the answers by now given that I have so much experience but instead I sometimes get even more confused than parents with one or two kids.

I Don't Like My Teen!

Barbara Greenberg, Ph.D.

I have a confession. I have three kids and I have one that I really don't particularly like. There, I said it. I find my other two kids much easier to like. My 14-year-old daughter is just so different than the other two and me. I consider myself outgoing and very social. My 14-year-old, on the other hand, is very quiet and seems more comfortable with books and our pets than she is with her peers and adults. She doesn't seem unhappy at all.

Confessions of a Child Talent Agent

Karen Lincoln, Marbles Kids Talent, Inc.

“Strike a pose there’s nothing to it.” Well that’s easy for Madonna to say, she’s never been a kid’s talent agent. Being the top kid’s agent in the Denver region for as long as I have, I’ve seen my fair share of rewards and penance. Being a mother myself and a fierce advocate for children in general, I can’t help welcoming every new kid talent who signs with our agency with the same sense of compassion as if they were a new niece or nephew in my own family.

Confidence or Arrogance: What Kind of Child Are You Raising?

Anne Leedom

We all know the feeling…the moment of pride when someone notices how outspoken or articulate our child is. We bask in the knowledge that our child is smart, has a great sense of self-esteem and succeeds at virtually everything they attempt to do. There is a fine line between confidence and pride and arrogance.
