Ask the Expert: Ways Women Can Start a Business

Q: I think recessions are ripe for women to start businesses; it kicks many out of complacency into pursuing their dreams. Yet, financing and capital is always a concern, even in an "up" economy. What are some ways women can start a business without digging themselves into a financial pit?

ND: There are so many things that you can do for next to nothing. When I started BabyLegs I didn't have a job, my husband did construction, and we had a new baby. I started by buying socks at the dollar store, cutting them, sewing them myself then selling them to friends, then retailers. There are so many opportunities that cost little or nothing. My mom sold Tupperware when I was a kid and we lived in a mobile home on hand-me-downs. Avon, MaryKay, and others are dedicated to the success of women. If there is anything that you are passionate about, seek others in that area, make connections, and ask for help from those that you admire.

Tip:
Think of one burning question that you want to ask the most influential person in your field. Get their phone number, call, and ask them. Most people still pick up the phone. "Hello My Name is Nicole, I really admire the work that you do. May I ask you one question?"
