There are "definitely more smiles on mom duty than Deputy Sheriff duty," explains Kelly Bocardo. Bocardo (second from right) is one of four women currently featured on TLC's Police Women of Maricopa County, which premiered last week.
Bocardo, a Deputy Sheriff and mom to a 2 year-old daughter, has been described as a "no-nonsense Latina [that's] feisty and tough, but brings a feminine touch to her interaction with the county's more colorful characters."
Bocardo shared some of her thoughts on balancing a high-impact job with the 180-degree demands of motherhood (which we believe are equally challenging).
Hybrid Mom: Were you more conscious of your actions/concerned for your life (on the job) once you became a parent?
Kelly Bocardo: Before I was a mother I had no big concerns in my line of work. I was what most would say a "wild child" at work. I didn't hesitate to go hands on and chase criminals. But now that I am a mother of a beautiful 2 1/2 year old girl my perception of work has changed. For instance: Before I had my little girl I didn't hesitate to chase a bad guy into a house but now I have to consider the consequences of my daughter growing up without Mommy.
HM: Does your daughter have any awareness of what you do? Or is it simply that you catch the bad guys?
KB: I wait for the day that my daughter has a clear understanding of what I do. I know she will be proud of Mommy. My daughter loves when I get dressed for work and put on my uniform. From the second I say "Mommy has to get dressed for work" she immediately runs to our office and starts helping my pull my uniform out. And when I get home she is the perfect little helper helping me put my vest and other parts of my uniform (NOT my gun) away. LOL
HM: What is your biggest accomplishment a) professionally and b) personally?
KB: My biggest accomplishment in life would definitely be the fact that I am a Deputy Sheriff, a mom, and a wife. Being a mom is definately a difficult job but when your also balancing in being a wife and a Deputy Sheriff life gets interesting. Its a great challenge. But the one thing I pride myself in most is family. Being a mom is the best gift that anyone could have ever given me. Definitely more smiles on mom duty than Deputy Sheriff duty.
