Top 3 iPhone Apps for Kids

Ahh, the iPhone. A phone, a music player, a game player. And, for a mom on the go, a chance to avoid a tantrum in the waiting room or catch up with a friend. The following applications can provide at least 10 minutes of peace.

Spin Art

Terrific introduction to entertainment on the iPhone for kids. It works just like the offline game - choose a color, spin the canvas, hold down a finger to "paint". Each design is unique. Younger players remember each color choice and design and will often spend upwards of ten minutes quietly experimenting, creating, clearing canvases and saving creations.

Blocked

The premise is simple, move the blue block out from behind the gray ones. Employ a strategy similar to “Rush Hour”. What’s complicated is that horizontal blocks only move left to right, while vertical blocks move only up and down. Adults as well as children will enjoy the challenge—no reading required.

Touch Physics

Looks simple—draw something on the screen to get the purple ball to hit the yellow star. Gets complex fast. While the description says ages four and up, I'm not so sure it's good for the pre-literate set. My seven year old is alternately entranced and dismayed, her younger sister lost interest at level 4.

For older kids (10+) I love two great games: TanZen (there is also a "Lite" version for free if you want to try it out) and Mancala. Both are great strategy games.

Thanks for sharing! I'm always looking for new games. We play Mancala on the living room carpet all the time, and I've played with an egg carton and M&M's in a pinch...

You'll find many sounding pictures for kiddies on http://www.Winzki.de I made them for my little boy, and he insists on testing them over and over ;-) These very nice apps have been specifically designed for the use by young children. (And you don't need to blow into the phone ;-) ) For example: If you swipe, it even works when another finger rests on the display. My boy taught me that to keep his frustration low. iTunes Link for "Farm Winzki": http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=331569... iTunes Link for "Lite Winzki" (free): http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=331553... Of course, there's a "Lite Winzki" for free, so you can try it out. More themes are "Farm Winzki", "Home Winzki", "Build Winzki", "Cute Winzki" and possibly even more... Have fun!

Hi. We just released our first iphone kids game called Treat Street. It's exploratory game for ages 3+. Inspired by and tested by our own little ones. Check it out at http://www.iTunes.com/apps/treatstreet It's actually fun for anyone that likes to dress up, ring doorbells and get treats:).

Check out istorytime it's a bunch of narrated and illustrated kids story books - including the #1 book on iTunes based on the dreamworks How to Train Your Dragon movies well as 25 others. They are inexpensive, my daughter loves them and they help them learn to read.

Another important Mac app for kids is Mac keylogger to keep a safe eye on them.
